Due to globalization and an upsurge in the demand for learning or teaching English, the thrust is now primarily on communicative skills and gaining competency in English. At Asian College of Teachers, we have designed a TESOL training program that uses Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method. This method has in recent years replaced the Grammar Translation method that at one time was extensively used in ESL class.
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method helps to further develop the student's communicative skills. This method not only adds to the skill but increases the confidence level of the teacher; mainly because the trainees learn to apply the theories taught in real classrooms with the constant supervision of experienced online trainers.
- In Communicative Language Teaching method the emphasis is on:
- Combining all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
- Keeping it learner-centred
- Developing communication skills in learners - Must use real and meaningful language
- Selecting reading material that is of interest to the students and is level appropriate
- Fostering critical thinking and creativity through creative writing assignments
- Stress is on learning to work as a team or group and learning through peer evaluation than only teacher appraisal.
- Well planned and clearly defined lesson plans are used for achieving communicative goals.
- Keeping student's interest and level in mind different projects are introduced
